First Week and a Bit!
Well, I’ve had my camera for just over a week now, and it’s like I’ve found a new life! On the weekend I unofficially photographed a friend’s 30th birthday (a few pictures from that event below), which was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had!!! It made me realise that I could definitely live the life of a photographer forever! But before the weekend I shot a work colleague who’s done some modelling (as he’s trying to be a pop star!) and so was quite comfortable in front of the lens! My favourite photo was the black and white one on the left, here. I was amazed at how it turned out! It also turned out that this random, crappy little area behind our office building made for a really good photo backdrop. 🙂
I also got a nice surprise when another photo of the same colleague was chosen to be the next in one of Canon’s photochains! Considering I hadn’t had the camera for a week when the shot got taken, I was really surprised that it was chosen to be included in the chain! I believe there were another ten or so entries to being the next in the chain, which may not seem like many, but it is when you’re an amateur and you’ve only had your DSLR for less than a week!!! Although, I must say that having prior knowledge of Photoshop when it comes to the whole digital photography thing has really helped.
Anyway, so like I said, I photographed a friend’s 30th birthday on the weekend, which was so much fun!!! The day started with a huge breakfast at Kazbah in Sydney and was followed by a cruise on Sydney Harbour. Please see here for a gallery of some of the photos I took. Now, I’m not sure about the pros, but there were a lot more crappy photos than good ones. And maybe that’s partially just the critic in me, but there were only a few photos I was really very happy with. So… I have a long way to go, and a lot to learn. Which I guess is probably a good thing…
That said, I’ve been asked to take photos this coming weekend for a family friend’s wedding. I’m so excited to be getting the experience!!! Although that said, I am a tad nervous: the venue looks to be relatively low in light, and I’m not too great with low light. I am, however considering getting a tripod. I really like low-light photography, but photos look rather silly when they’re just all blurry. So yeah…
I’ve also been asked to photograph a friend’s dance company rehearsal, a couple’s newborn baby, a family friend’s fashion design and potentially Ash’s (who’s featured in the photos here) promo pictures (not sure when they will be, though!). It’s all very exciting!!! I could definitely get used to the photographer life! 🙂 Our niece’s christening is also in a couple of weeks, which will also provide for a great photo-taking opportunity!
Oh and I’m also hoping to improve on HDR photography! I had a go at it last night, and it didn’t turn out very well, so I’m not posting it here! But once I’ve gotten my head around Lightroom, I’ll focus more on the HDR. For some reason I really like it.
And with that, I need to go and sleep. I’m awfully sleepy. Can’t wait for the weekend and my first wedding shoot!!!
Edit: I played around in Lightroom last night and ended up with this pic from the weekend. Quite happy with it, really. 🙂
